Erskine Childers was originally a loyal British imperialist but became an Irish nationalist and was ultimately executed by the newly independent Irish Free State during the Irish Civil War. His son, Erskine Hamilton Childers, was the fourth president of Ireland.

His novel The Riddle of the Sands is regarded variously as the first modern spy novel, a cautionary tale of an imminent war with Germany, and one of great sailing and seamanship narratives.
